If you’ve visited one of Heart to Heart Hospice’s partner nursing homes in East Texas, there’s a good chance you’ve heard someone ask, “When is Benny Boo coming back?”

Benny Boo Brown, a mini Aussiedoodle and beloved companion of Sammie Brown, Community Education Representative for Heart to Heart Hospice in Lufkin, has become a favorite visitor among residents throughout the area. While Benny isn’t a certified therapy dog, his gentle nature and friendly personality have made a lasting impact everywhere he goes.

As Benny approaches his first birthday this November, he has already spent countless hours brightening days of residents in nursing homes and assisted living communities. Each individual he comes in contact with lights up when they see him, often sharing stories about beloved pets they once had and still miss.

Some of Benny’s most memorable visits have been to memory care and Alzheimer’s communities. Sammie has seen firsthand how Benny’s presence sparks smiles, kisses and moments of recognition. During a recent visit with a resident experiencing a significant decline, Benny’s arrival brought out the familiar smile his family and caregivers know and love.

“Dogs just bring a sense of comfort you can’t get anywhere else,” Sammie said. “Watching residents interact with Benny and seeing the joy he brings is one of the sweetest things I’ve ever experienced.”

This November, Benny will celebrate his first birthday in true Benny Boo fashion with a Snoopy-themed party at a local nursing home, complete with some of his canine friends and plenty of excited residents.

Whether he’s accepting extra attention, posing for photos or earning a well-deserved rib after a day of “work,” Benny continues to remind us that comfort comes in many forms. Sometimes, it arrives on four paws with a wagging tail and a heart full of love.

Happy early birthday, Benny Boo! We’re grateful for the joy you, and your mom, Sammie, bring to so many!
